Surrounded by over an acre of lush tropical garden Bananas Bistro is an enchanting island eatery

We have teamed up with blogger and travel writer Charli Moore to provide you with an insider’s guide to our beautiful island’s activities and attractions. She’ll also be reviewing Nevis’ varied array of eateries and beach bars; here she talks to Leslie Stewart, the general manager of island favorite Bananas Bistro.

Hidden away in the upper reaches of the historic Hamilton Estate Bananas Bistro is perhaps Nevis’ most enchanting eatery. Surrounded by over an acre of lush tropical garden where hummingbirds flit to and fro and unprecedented sunset views offer nightly entertainment, the restaurant is known for its farm to fork philosophy and endearing interiors curated by vivacious owner Gillian Smith Lowe.

Oozing in island charm the property encompasses a terraced dining area, rooftop verandah (ideal for pre and post dinner drinks), and an eclectic boutique filled with individual pieces that owner Gillian has picked up on her travels. Known for their kitchen garden curries, the menu at Bananas features international flavors with a good hint of Caribbean flare. Red lobster linguine, Moroccan lamb shanks, and traditional Nevisian goat water (served in customary coal-fired pots hand-crafted on the island), are just some of the highlights.

Quick fire questions with General Manager Leslie

What would you recommend to first-time diners?
Leslie says, “Sipping sundowners on our Verandah is a must as the view is totally unspoiled; it’s simply rainforest, ocean, and sky. As the light fades the restaurant comes to life and our multitude of fairy lights start to twinkle in the twilight. Try the Taste of Nevis Mezze Platter for an insight into local fare, and round off your meal with a tipple from the extensive collection of aged Caribbean rums that are displayed in the cozy lounge area.”

The interiors at Bananas are incredibly eclectic, can you tell me about the inspiration behind the design?
“Everything you see at Bananas has been curated by the wonderful Gillian. A prolific world traveler and keen adventurer Gillian has a very varied resume; from working as a topless ice dancer in South Korea to selling Carpets in Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar she’s lived a very rich and unconventional life. This is reflected in everything from the table settings to the artwork that adorns the walls here at the restaurant.”

What is your favorite place or activity on Nevis?
“A late afternoon swim as the sun sets into the ocean is one of my guilty pleasures. There’s nothing quite as refreshing as the cool water enveloping me, coaxing me to dive down under the waves and spend a second or two immersed in the underwater world. Of course it’s mandatory to follow with a refreshing beverage; an ice cold Carib beer usually hits the spot!”
