Bay front dining in Charlestown, Nevis

We have teamed up with blogger and travel writer Charli Moore to provide you with an insider’s guide to our beautiful island’s activities and attractions. She’ll also be reviewing Nevis’ varied array of eateries and beach bars; here she talks to Elizabeth Smith, owner of the vibrant Café des Arts.

Along the Bay Front in Charlestown, where frigatebirds and pelicans congregate, Café des Arts stands out as the place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of life in the capital. Surrounded by an ensemble of restored Georgian buildings, the relaxed ambience of the café is reflected in the simple, wholesome menu and welcoming nature of its proprietor Elizabeth.

Moving to the island 11 years ago, Elizabeth began her foray into the Nevisian restaurant scene after a successful career as a private caterer in London. Assisting with the re-launch of the much-loved Banana’s Bistro (an Aladdin’s cave of arts on Nevis island), she then took over the running of Le Café des Arts which is now renowned for the righteous burger nights and all-day breakfasts served up throughout the week.

Quick fire questions with owner Elizabeth

What would you recommend to first time diners?
Elizabeth says, “Our house special BLTs are a real hit with diners. We have some locals who come in just to have the BLT and have yet to sample any of the other dishes on our menu!”

Tell me something interesting about yourself:
“During my time as a private caterer in London I often served the Queen and many of the Royal Family. It was a real pleasure to know that my food was being enjoyed by such distinguished guests!”

What is your favorite place or activity on Nevis?
“I’m training to take part in the cross-channel swim next March. A two-mile endurance swim across the water from Oualie Beach here on Nevis to Reggae Beach on St. Kitts, a certain amount of training is required! Consequently I’m spending a lot of time swimming along the coast to build my strength; I just love exploring the shoreline and would recommend the activity to anyone who visits the island.”
